From the Battlefield to Civilian Protection

From the Battlefield to Civilian Protection

How Military Technologies Are Shaping a New Generation of Shelters

Technologies developed to protect service members on the front line should not remain confined to military applications. We firmly believe that these technologies should form the foundation of modern civil-protection solutions.

This is the principle followed by the engineering and manufacturing team behind the Zalizna Volya™ and PARABELLA brands.

Recently, we had the opportunity to present one of our solutions at Eurosatory in Paris, the world’s largest international defence exhibition. For us, this represented not only recognition of Ukraine’s engineering expertise, but also confirmation that solutions developed under the conditions of modern warfare are establishing new standards of protection.

PARABELLA – where new engineering solutions are born

Not everyone is aware that PARABELLA is a sub-brand of the Zalizna Volya™ trademark, established to develop military shelters for fortified defensive positions.

The PARABELLA armoured capsule is an engineered protection system designed for deployment in environments where threat levels are at their highest, and the margin for error is virtually nonexistent.

Its design integrates a range of solutions that define the modern approach to protective engineering:

  • Multilayer armour-steel construction
  • Additional protection against shaped-charge munitions
  • All-round protection and 360-degree visibility
  • Capability for extended occupancy by military personnel
  • Modular deployment architecture

The concept of armoured field fortifications is not new. Earlier solutions included BUK, VSB and SPS armoured capsules, followed by MVS-2-type fortifications used during the defence of Mariupol.

However, modern warfare has fundamentally changed the requirements imposed on fortifications. The widespread use of unmanned aerial systems, precision-guided weapons and high-powered artillery is forcing engineers to reassess even well-established structural concepts.

War as the ultimate quality test

The development of military protective systems requires a continuous search for the optimal balance between protection level, mobility, manufacturability, ergonomics and deployment speed.

It is under these conditions that solutions emerge which may subsequently find applications far beyond the battlefield.

Every completed military project contributes to a growing body of engineering knowledge that forms the basis for the next generation of solutions.

From military technology to civilian shelters

The full-scale war has also transformed the requirements for civilian protective structures.

Today, simply constructing a robust shelter is no longer sufficient. A modern shelter must be rapidly installed, adaptable to the requirements of a specific site, suitable for the prolonged accommodation of people, and capable of addressing contemporary threats.

For this reason, our civilian shelters incorporate principles refined during the development of military protection systems:

  • Modular structural design
  • Efficient load distribution
  • Rapid installation
  • Carefully engineered interior ergonomics
  • Maximum personal safety during extended sheltering periods

Engineering expertise validated in practice under the most demanding operating conditions can be effectively transferred to civilian protection, while being adapted to the capabilities and constraints of everyday civilian operating environments.

Experience translated into enhanced safety

Military projects of a complexity few companies are capable of delivering enable the Zalizna Volya™ team to accumulate knowledge that supports the development of increasingly effective civilian-protection solutions.

Every new product, structural solution, and field-derived insight becomes part of our engineering expertise.

This is why Zalizna Volya™ engineering capabilities are developed not only within the design bureau, but also through the practical creation of solutions that meet the highest standards of human protection. These solutions are tested under the most demanding conditions and demonstrate their value every day.
